Local food is called Krioyo (pronounced the same as criollo, the Spanish word for "Creole") and boasts a blend of flavours and techniques best compared to Caribbean cuisine and Latin American cuisine. Dishes common in Curaçao are found in Aruba and Bonaire as well. Popular dishes include: stobá (a stew made with various ingredients such as papaya, beef or goat) , Guiambo (soup made from okra and seafood), kadushi (cactus soup), sopi mondongo (intestine soup), funchi (cornmeal paste similar to fufu, ugali and polenta) and a lot of fish and other seafood.

In the true British tradition, cricket is the leading sport both played - and watched - on Curacao. Matches are played from January to mid-July, both locally and on a regional level.  School children, both boys and girls, can often be found playing in schoolyards around the island.  You can watch both men and woman play cricket Thursday nights during the season at Grove Park in Charlestown.

Affordable Curacao
The catibbeans largest port is coming into its own with a rich historic past and diversions aplenty in the form of casino gambling, duty-free shopping and fine dining.
  • Explore the island by day, discover a secluded white-sand cove speckled with the island's famed Divi Divi trees, or ride horseback through a national park.
  • By evening be ready to dance the night away, listen to hot jazz and enjoy some of the Caribbean's best cuisine under the stars.
  • Curaçao's long standing ties to Holland are reflected in rows of crayola-colored townhouses with red tiled roofs and rococo-style facades lining the streets of historic Willemstad, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, placing it in the company of the Great Wall of China and the Taj Mahal.
  • With miles of reefs, some only 10 feet from the surface, and 65 world-class dive sites featuring a rainbow of unusual sea life and underwater visibility up to 150 feet, Curaçao is one of the Caribbean's top dive destinations.
  • Curaçao is renowned for its coral reefs which make it an excellent spot for scuba diving. The beaches on the south side contain many popular diving spots.

Curacao's 38 beaches range from white sand to pebbly cliffside, public coves to private strands, and some with and some without full-service amenities like bathrooms and snack bars. Topless sunbathing is officially prohibited but not unusual. Snorkeling and diving opportunities are excellent all around the island. Moray eels are commonly sighted, but sharks are rare. Beware sea urchins and fire coral, and watch out for the poisonous machineel trees that dot the shoreline.

The swimming beaches are clustered along the southwestern coast, where the water tends to be calm and the visibility good. The northern coast is rougher with strong undertows and a pounding surf. The Seaquarium Beach near town is usually crowded because it offers everything from a water sports center to a souvenir shop and even has a beach bar. You can snorkel and dive right from the beach, and the windsurfing is good as well. Barbara Beach to the east is a popular spot with families and has a snack bar. West of town, Kas Abou has great diving and snorkeling and a laid-back feel without compromising basic comforts. If you're willing to do a little looking, you can usually find a beach to suit your desires.

An unusual feature of Curaçao diving is that the sea floor drops off steeply within a few hundred feet of the shore, and the reef can easily be reached without a boat. This drop-off is locally known as the "blue edge." Strong currents and lack of beaches make the rocky northern coast dangerous for swimming and diving, but experienced divers sometimes dive there from boats when conditions permit. The southern coast is very different and offers remarkably calm waters. The coastline of Curaçao features many bays and inlets, many of them suitable for mooring.
